Horarium Parvum

Published on 28 July 2024 at 17:56

An Horarium in monasticism roughly means "schedule."

Ordinarily, it brings regularity and order to the monk's life by dividing his day into seven or eight "hours" of prayer while interspersing allowances for personal and communal time for meditation, reading, victuals, work, and leisure.

As a lay person, I do not live by such a rule.  Consequently, I do not have a true horarium in this sense.

However, I am interested in bringing more order and regularity to my prayer and work life.  As the Benedictines are fond to say, "ora et labora!" (tr. Work and pray!).  These should be the focus of my day-to-day life.

With this in mind, I propose the following adjustments:

(1a) RISE: 4:50 AM (Optional, Matins Prayers - Book of Hours; Devotions: LOBVM [Sat.] or Office of the Dead [Mon.])

      - Morning Prayers, Coffee, Exercise, Administrative prep (for work)-

(1b) *ANGELUS*: 6:00 AM

(2) Lauds: 6:15 AM (*BENEDICTINE DAILY PRAYER*) (Devotions: LOBVM [Sat] or Office of the Dead [Mon])

     - WORK - [~3 Hrs.]

(3) Lectio Divina (w/ Post): 9:00 AM (Optional, Morning Prayer - Book of Hours)

     - WORK - [~3 Hrs.]

     - Meditation in Garden (w/ Weekday Devotion, if applicable)-

(4b) Sext & Lunch: 12:50 PM (Optional, Midday Prayer - Book of Hours)

    - WORK - [~ 3 Hrs.]

    - SCHOOL - [~2 Hrs.], Or Siesta (if needed)

(5) Vespers: 6:00PM (*BENEDICTINE DAILY PRAYER*) (Optional, Evening Prayer - Book of Hours; Devotions: LOBVM [Sat] or Office of the Dead [Mon.])
